General and Subject Based Book Collections

Art collection: A collection of books relating to art and art history. A majority of these books were once a part of the main library collection.

Harold Bindloss collection:  A collection of books written by English novelist, Harold Bindloss. This collection was donated by Professor Norman Smith. 

Cape Verdean collection: Books related to Cape Verde which have been given to RIC Special Collections by a variety of donors. Some books were removed from the Cape Verdean archival collections and added to this book collection.

Carla Martin Cape Verdean collection: Items in this book collection are related to the topic of Cabo Verdean culture, language, music, politics, history and literature. The books are in several languages, principle among them Portuguese and Kriolu (Crioulo).

Columbus collection: Books regarding Christopher Columbus which were donated by a variety of people, including Senator Paolo Emilio Taviani.

Education collection: Books relating to education in Rhode Island and includes school committee reports. This collection is browsable on the 4th floor hallway of Adams Library.

Fine Print collection: Books regarding prints created as art works. This collection initially began via donation from Sally Wilson.

Edward Gorey collection: A collection of books illustrated by Edward Gorey. The collection was started by a donation from Debra Thomson.

Juvenile collection: Children’s books predominately published pre-1965. Many of the items in the collection were removed from the library’s main collection and cataloged for Special Collections.

Lusophone Studies collection: A collection of books relating to the culture of Portuguese-speaking peoples.

Nursing collection: Biographies histories, reports, studies, textbooks, and handbooks related to the field of nursing. Many of the items in the collection were donated by Rhode Island College professor Osky Cascone.

Rare Books collection: Contains books that were removed from the RIC Adams Library General Collection and added to the Special Collections, as well as books that were donated. A majority of this collection is browsable in the Special Collection Reading Room. [Note: The inclusion of a separate rare books collection does not imply other books within the Special Collections book collection are not rare or unique. These are books that fall out of the scope of our other book collections].

Rhode Island collection: Books related specifically to the history of Rhode Island. A majority of this collection is browsable in the Special Collection Reading Room. [Note: The inclusion of a separate Rhode Island collection does not imply other books within the Special Collections book collection do not relate to the history of Rhode Island].

Social and political collection: Publications relating to social and political issues.

Textbook collection: A collection of historical textbooks dated circa 1831-1958.
